Organisational Transformation: What You Need to Know

What is Organisational Transformation?

Organisational Transformation is the process and everything involved in changing an organisation’s culture, method or structure to achieve a specific goal.

This translates to moving the company forward, helping it meet reality by addressing a challenge, or even gaining a competitive advantage. It’s how to move an organisation from its current position to where it is expected to be.

One of the significant reasons for transformation is a response to market change. By adapting to market changes, an organisation keeps up with potential customers, stays ahead and makes progress without hindrance while also staying ahead of competitors.

What are the Key Aspects of Organisational Transformation?

1. Vision and strategy alignment

This is the first aspect transformation affects. This is basically to understand the “Why”. Why is transformation necessary? Why will it be happening? What are the vision and values that guide the decisions to be made? What are the specific plans, goals and objectives to make this end goal of transformation possible? Answering these questions can be done by assessments like a SWOT analysis of the company, market analysis, company gap analysis and stakeholder analysis to understand the state of the organisation presently and what needs to change.

2. Cultural change

This involves the attitude, beliefs, values, and actions within the company, which are a reflection of the work ethics of the organisation. This culture is important for transformation, as a rigid culture will make this transformation fail. However, a culture that supports growth, ideation, creativity, and risk-taking, alongside improvement, will aid in successful transformation. Therefore, building a proper culture through communication, leadership modelling, change management initiatives, and incentivisation is important.

3. Process improvement

Processes are what make or mar an organisation. For the organisation to be at its current state, there are processes aiding and holding it together, or in the worst cases, pulling it apart. It is important to identify and analyse existing processes to know the inadequacies, bottlenecks, underlying problems, and areas for improvement and to know exactly what to start, stop, and continue.

4. Technological innovation

Our world is moving rapidly when it comes to technology and its products. Leveraging technology is an essential part of organisational transformation because technology serves to improve the efficiency of processes and employees’ work ethics and modes. Think about creating new services and products, remaking business models to fit technological devices, building modern communication channels, and having a better digital presence.

5. Leadership and Change management

It is one thing to plan the organisational transformation but another to implement it successfully. This transformation involves employees and leaders intensively, so their participation needs to be paramount. Leaders must act and motivate employees to effect the necessary changes and communicate the goals and visions as necessary.

What are the elements of a successful organisational transformation?

1. Change management plan

As change management is an essential part of organisation transformation, it is vital to have a clearly defined roadmap for this process. This plan should entail the organisation’s transition process and support for the employees. This model helps structure and streamline the process, increasing the chances of success.

2. Clearly defined and communicated vision and endpoint

The transformation of an organisation must have a clearly defined endpoint. The objectives of this change process must be clearly defined with action steps and then clearly communicated to the employees while giving the directions.

3. Strong and active leadership

The change management team must include people who are directly involved in the change process and directly supervise the employees affected by this change. These leaders have to actively participate in the change process and communicate directly with employees. These leaders have to guide the other company members by example, showing them why the change is necessary and how to participate.

With these three specific elements, the process of organisational transformation gets closer to successful fruition. Implementing a plan with enough resources and by effective executives will make the process easier.

What are the challenges of organisational transformation?

1. Resistance to change

Many employees may find it difficult to accept the changes that come with organisational transformation for reasons such as fear of the outcome, power dynamic changes, and deeply ingrained company culture. The best way to address this is to create and explain the change process so that employees understand where they stand before and after.

2. Risk and Uncertainty

Plans don’t always go according to plan. These transformations can come up with unforeseen challenges, with rapid change becoming overwhelming for the entire organisation while rendering several systems useless too suddenly. A good mitigation option for this is to go at a pace suitable for the organisation and adjust accordingly during the process.

3. Communication and engagement

As easy as it sounds, communication might become problematic during this organisational transformation as employees might not feel included or listened to. It is important to update employees as necessary during the organisational transformation process to avoid this problem.

Conclusion

Organisational transformation is important to move your company forward, especially in today’s age and time. Set clear and SMART goals, communicate and lead your staff, improve your company processes and technological innovation and see how your organisation will improve.
