A Change Management Office (CMO) is becoming increasingly important as organisations seek to improve agility and navigate the volatility and complexity of the current business environment. There is a strong recognition that positioning the organisation to manage, and outpace change is paramount.

The Change Management Office or function supports this by ensuring that a standard approach is adopted to implementing changes and owns the change management methodology and tools.  Different organisations have different locations for this functional group. Some of the decisions that inform its location include, where most projects are emanating from, risk, leadership influence, and perception of change management.

The important building blocks of the CMO are strong leadership and an alignment with the organisation’s strategic direction. The function is responsible for ensuring changes have the right resources required to deliver and works closely with stakeholders to ensure the change is structured correctly from the onset to deliver desired results.

The CMO plays a critical role in managing the prioritisation of initiatives, tracking and managing a portfolio of changes, monitoring, and mitigating change risks, and coaching change leaders to fulfill their roles. The office works with the leadership to ensure change management is embedded as a strategic competency to increase the organisations capacity and responsiveness to change.

As a Centre of Excellence in the organisation, this office should be staffed with skilled change professionals who are upskilled often to meet the challenges presented by the changing business environment.
